All About Opal

All About Opal

Not your granny’s stone anymore! Opal is a stunning, typically translucent stone that comes in a variety of stunning colors. Covering most colors of the rainbow, and each with their own amazing benefits, there is an Opal for everyone. This powerful balancing stone promotes healing and positivity to its wearer.

At one time thought to be bad luck, this “Queen of Gems” has proven to be anything but. Opal’s are formed in silica rich waters as these waters run through the crevices of the earth. Through this process, the silica packs together into a sphere shape. It does not have a crystalline structure like some other stones and instead it appears smooth. Opal’s are mineraloids. Mining of these magnificent stones dates back to 400 BC in Europe's Carpathian Mountains. Today it is commonly mined in Australia, Mexico, Brazil, among others. Opal is considered a precious gem and comes with a price tag to match.

Real V Fake

Hold under the light, real opal has layers of colors and patterns but if you place the stone on its side, it should appear solid. It shouldn’t look perfect. It does not have a crystalline structure which means it should appear smooth inside. Opals often appear iridescent and can be found in many colors. Opal’s are pretty hardy stones and shouldn’t scratch easily. Another factor is the price. Opal’s are considered precious gems and tend to be more expensive. If your opal bracelet was affordable, I would question its authenticity.
